The research by Petinsurance.ie, also looked at some of the more unusual names pets are given - including being named after famous people or fictional characters - Larry Gogan, Michael Collins, Elizabeth Taylor, Goose and Maverick and Bark Twain.
Almost half (47%) of pet owners say they wait to get to know their pet before choosing a name.
Traditionally 'human' first names were also given to pets, including; Paula, Tarquin, Emma, Eileen, Freida and Willie.
