One Direction star Liam Payne, has died at the age of 31.

The singer reportedly fell from the balcony of a hotel in Argentina, where he'd been staying with his girlfriend.

Police say he had "extremely serious injuries", and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Reports suggest he had been acting erratically leading up to his death.

Police say the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but they had been aware of a man reportedly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Fans have gathered at the hotel where he died in Buenos Aires, and held a candlelit vigil in his memory.

The singer-songwriter is survived by his 7-year-old son, Bear, who he shared with former partner Cheryl Tweedy.

Liam shot to fame at the age of 16 as a contestant on the X Factor in 2010.

The five members of One Direction met on the talent show after originally auditioning as solo singers.

In a statement on his death, show producers said Liam will leave a "lasting legacy" on the music industry and on his fans.

Former X-Factor star Mary Byrne, was on the show the same year Liam was competing with One Direction - she says she felt hugely protective of the boys at the time.

"I know this is going to sound very weird when I say, I felt like their mother when I was on the show and in the house with them.

"They were very close to me and I was very close to them, and Liam in particular, because he, to me, always gave me the impression he was the one who had his head together".

Boy band One Direction are pictured meeting fans as they leave the ITV studios following a guest appearance on the Daybreak show.

Former X Factor presenter, Dermot O'Leary described him as 'a joy'.

Paris Hilton's written how it's "so upsetting" to hear the news.

Music streaming platform Spotify, also posted to share their condolences.

"We are deeply saddened by the news of Liam Payne's passing. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the many fans who loved and supported him."

Meanwhile, Britain's Got Talent has cancelled its auditions in Blackpool in England, today following the death of Liam Payne.

Simon Cowell, who created the show and is on the judging panel, was instrumental to One Direction's success.

The boyband was signed to Cowell's record label Syco Entertainment after finishing third on The X Factor in 2010.
