Strike action by on-call firefighters has been called off for 24 hours to allow for talks at the Labour Court.
SIPTU says employers must be willing to acknowledge more resources and investment is needed for the service.
It's calling for workers need to be paid better to reflect the responsibilities of the job.
Retained - or part-time - firefighters are paid an annual salary of €8,500 and an additional fee for each additional call-out they attend.
2,000 members of the Retained Firefighter service began strike action last Tuesday 20th June with up to half of stations closed as a result.
If a resolution isn't reached today, an all-out strike will take place from midnight.
