"Olympic swimming pools" of raw sewage are being pumped into environments across Ireland.
The Environmental Protection Agency says 12 towns and villages will continue to release human waste into the environment until at least 2025.
Two of those towns will be waiting until 2027.
34 Irish towns & villages release raw sewage into the environment every day & a third of these will continue to do so after 2024. 12 large towns & cities did not meet waste water treatment standards. The agency also found that raw sewage was being released from 34 towns and villages every day last year, because they didn't have treatment plants.
Enforcement officer with the EPA, Noel Byrne, said that Irish Water isn't doing enough to tackle the sewage issue.
While he admits "some progress" is being made, it's still much too slow.
"The volume of raw sewage that goes out to these is literally 4 Olympic sized swimming pool, that's what's gets flushed into the environment," he said.
