New Supports Available For Victims Of Image Based Sexual Assault

People who've had intimate images or videos of themselves posted online now have a new way to report them and have them removed.

The process can be done on hotline.ie, and is one aspect of a new Department of Justice awareness campaign aimed at highlighting the issue.

1 in 10 adults between 18 and 37 claim to have had an intimate image of them shared online without consent, according to department research.

Junior Justice Minister, Hildegarde Naughton, says the site will speak to social media platforms, messaging services and internet providers to get the images removed.

"Then, if the victim wants, the relevant information can be passed to an Garda Síochana to investigate," she added.

The new system is a follow on from Coco's Law, which came into force in February.

The law makes the sharing or threat of sharing images with another person's consent illegal.

Those found guilty could face seven years in jail.
