A new report has found motherhood affects a woman's career prospects.
The 2023 Workplace Equality survey found that over two-thirds (68%) of workers surveyed said parenthood impacts a woman’s career progression.
Regional Recruitment Manager with Matrix Recruitment, Breda Dooley, says becoming a parent can affect how women are seen in the workplace.
"There's an unconscious bias towards women who may be considering starting a family as women are still considered the primary carers.
"A question highlighted was a mother's ability to meet the demands of her professional role in the workplace.
"This highlights that mothers are not offered as many opportunities."
The study also found that 75% have experienced job discrimination, and 44% know a colleague of the opposite sex with the same job who is being paid more than them.
The research also found that 78% of respondents identified ageism as an issue in the workplace.
More than two-thirds of those surveyed said that workers over the age of 50 have fewer promotional opportunities than their younger colleagues, a jump of 19% since 2022.
However, the majority of people agreed (89%) that people over the age of 50 have as much to contribute to the workplace as those under the age of 40.
The online survey was carried out in July 2023 among 1,419 adults working across a range of industries, sectors and locations.
More than half said that over 50s have more life skills and the ability to mentor and guide younger colleagues.
48% also said "mature workers are more reliable than younger people".
