The jury in the trial of a man accused of capital murder has been discharged.
Stephen Silver, of Foxford, Co Mayo, is accused of murdering Detective Garda Colm Horkan, who was shot dead in Castlerea, Co Roscommon, in June 2020.
Stephen Silver’s trial opened yesterday with a prosecuting barrister giving the jury an overview of the case his team intended to present over the next six weeks or so.
The jury, which was made up of six men and six women, was sworn in on Monday.
After the opening address was delivered, the prosecution then began calling witnesses. The jurors were shown maps and photos of the various locations relevant to the investigation into the murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan.
A number of Garda witnesses were also called before the first day of the trial drew to a close yesterday afternoon.
This morning, it was brought to the judge’s attention that one of the jurors has difficulty serving.
Neither legal team wished to continue with just eleven jurors so Ms. Justice Tara Burns decided to discharge this jury and a new one will be sworn in this afternoon.
