New Homeless Figures Show 9,753 People In Emergency Accommodation

9,753 people were in emergency accommodation last month, the latest homeless figures have shown.

Figures released by the Housing Minister show 6,194 adults and 3,559 children were homeless in December.

It's a decrease of 215 people compared to November, including 111 families.

However, there was an increase of 37 adults - which officials say was expected due to new beds for rough sleepers becoming available.

Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy said: "December saw a reduction of 111 families and 252 of their dependents in emergency accommodation which was to a degree anticipated given the time of year.

"The report does show an increase of 37 adults accessing emergency accommodation, which was expected given the large numbers of new beds introduced for rough sleepers in the Dublin region."

"These individuals are now receiving the care and support that they need to exit homelessness to an independent tenancy."

Cold snap

The release of the new homeless figures comes as the country is hit by a cold snap.

The Dublin Region Homeless Executive has put in place extra beds to deal with any extra demand.

However, the Inner City Helping Homeless group says it still has 'grave concerns' for the safety of people sleeping rough.

Minister Murphy said that action is being taken.

He noted: "I issued instructions to all local authorities to ensure that shelter is available for all those at risk of sleeping rough. Increased outreach activity will encourage those who are rough sleeping to avail of the available shelter.

"The DRHE has confirmed that there is sufficient bed capacity to provide shelter for all of those who wish to avail of it."
