Plans to bring in a gambling regulator are going before cabinet ministers today.
One of the main roles of the new body will be to look at how technology has impacted the gambling industry.
The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland will do this by regulating advertising, gambling websites and apps.
A major focus will also be put on public well-being, for both online and face-to-face gambling.
The Gambling Regulation Bill will also provide for a new approach to the licensing of gambling in Ireland.
The regulator is expected to begin its work in 2023, once this bill is approved and enacted.
A CEO of the body has been appointed ahead of the legislation being passed by the Oireachtas.
