1 in 12 private vehicles was on Irish roads last year without insurance.
The total number of uninsured vehicles in 2022 was 187,803 - an increase of over 13,000 on 2021 figures.
Last year was the third year in a row that the number of uninsured private vehicles on Irish roads increased.
Vehicles without a valid insurance disc accounted for 8.3% of the entire fleet of private cars.
CEO of the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland, David Fitzgerald, outlines the current penalties if motorists are caught driving an uninsured vehicle.
"Gardai have the power to seize the vehicle on the spot, as well as other significant penalties such as an automatic court appearance, five penalty points, and a substantial fine.
"It's a serious road safety issue.
"People who choose to drive uninsured also may be driving unroadworthy cars - We see that a lot".
