More than a third of people say they check their phones within the first five minutes of waking up
Meanwhile almost three quarters of people check their phones more than 50 times day, a new study has found.
The annual survey from Deloitte younger people were more likely to be heavy users.
Among those aged 18 to 24, 37 per cent checked their phone over 50 times a day, while women used their device slightly more than men.
Many in this age cohort check it over 100 times a day, or once every 14 minutes.
The study, which polled 1,000 people, also found 57 per cent struggle to tell the difference between real and fake news.
Nearly half of respondents stopped using at least one social media website during 2021, with - too much fake news - being cited as one of the most common issues causing them to leave.
