More Than 30,000 Hospital Procedure Cancelled Up To Sept 2023
30,833 elective procedures were cancelled as a result of pressures in emergency departments in the first nine months of 2023.
The Health Minister revealed the figures in the Dáil this morning, saying it represents around 2% of the total procedures in that time frame.
Sinn Fein has called for elective-only hospitals to be built, as lined out in Slaintecare plans.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly told the party's health spokesperson David Cullinane that six surgical hubs are in the pipeline:
"One of them will be in your own neck of the woods in Waterford Hospital.
"And I visited Mount Carmel, where the first one is now under construction, and we'll be taking that over in the coming months.
"They, I believe - certainly the surgical teams I'm talking to - believe they can be a game changer for people waiting for procedures, both inpatient and day case."
