More than 2,000 drivers have been caught by Gardai using their mobile phones in the past month.
There's been a 55 per cent increase in people being caught using their phones behind the wheel, since Gardaí have taken on roads policing duties as part of their shifts.
Since April 12th, all uniformed Gardai have been carrying out 30 minutes of high-visibility roads policing during their shift, in response to a high number of road deaths so far this year.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris will tell the Transport Committee on Wednesday afternoon, that in the four weeks since, 2,148 fixed charge notices have been issued for mobile phone use.
79 people have died on the roads so far this year, a 22% increase compared to the same time last year.
It will also be claimed that there was a 40 percent increase in breath checks, with a 17% rise in the number of people caught driving under the influence.
Commissioner Drew Harris will also reveal plans to install three more average speed-limit cameras, similar to ones already located on at the Port Tunnel in Dublin and on the N7.
The new cameras are due to be located on the N2, the N3 and the N5.
