More Than 1,900 Drivers Caught Speeding Over Long Weekend
1,973 drivers were detected speeding over the October long weekend.
An extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation was in place between 7am on Thursday, October 26th, and 7am on Wednesday, November 1st.
Two people died on Irish roads during this period, and nine serious collisions took place that resulted in nine people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries.
Of the 647,933 vehicles checked for speeding, 1,973 drivers were detected speeding.
288 were found to be using phones, 110 learner drivers were caught behind the wheel unaccompanied, and 76 weren't wearing seatbelts.
The number of motorists detected as driving under the influence of drugs increased by over 55% when compared to the last October Bank Holiday Weekend.
157 people have died on Irish roads so far in 2023 - 34 more than this time last year.
