There was a mixed reaction to yesterday's twitter silence campaign, which was a response to abuse and threats made against several people on the social networking site. In fact #twittersilence was the top trending topic yesterday, ahead of the Dublin Bus strike and other immediate issues.
But as the day went on it was soon followed by #inspiring women as many users decided that speaking out against the trolls was more effective than silence. "Twitter silence is like ignoring the postman because you didn't like a letter he delivered," one tweet suggested.
Scotland Yard is investigating at least 8 complaints of abusive messages sent on Twitter, including a threat of rape and bomb threats, to several female journalists. Mary Beard was the latest person to receive a bomb threat through the site.
