A referendum in May could make it easier for married couples to divorce.
At the moment, people have to be separated for four years before they can get a divorce.
The referendum proposes taking that reference out of the Constitution.
If passed, it would allow politicians to reduce the waiting time to two years.
The Government plans to hold the vote in May, alongside the local and European elections.
Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan said: “The Government wishes to ensure that the process for obtaining a divorce is fair, dignified and humane and allows both parties to move forward with their lives within a reasonable timeframe.”
The Government has today approved the holding of a referendum to amend the Constitutional provisions on divorce. The referendum will be held alongside the votes for the European and Local elections in late May 2019. #Referendum pic.twitter.com/HMvUyvbdDt
