A married woman was scammed out of almost 50 thousand euro after an on-line romance with a con-man.
The woman was showered with expensive gifts before being asked to invest in the fraudster's business.
She woman met the man online, and was given scarves and perfume before being asked to invest in his company.
Over a 13 month period she parted with 48 thousand euro and initially delayed reporting the fraud to gardai as she was married.
In a separate case in the west of Ireland a fraudster was found guilty of taking nearly 19 thousand euro from a woman he met through a dating website.
Gardai say the extent of the romance scam is not fully known because people are too embarrassed to report it.
They're asked to cover the cost of travelling to see the victims, for emergency medical expenses and a business opportunity that would allow them to live together comfortably.
