Wheelchair users can walk again with the help of an Exoskeleton programme that has been launched in DCU.

The robotic device allows people affected by paralysis to strengthen their muscles by supported walking.

The cutting edge technology allows them to stand up and walk aided by the robotic frame that’s strapped to the body.

The programme is collaboration between DCU and explorer and activist Mark Pollock who was paralysed in 2010.

Mark hopes that it’s the first step in a cure for paralysis: 'That is the Mars or South Pole of spinal cord injury and that's going to happen in stages and the end game is to have a complete cure and to walk again'.

Those with paralysis through spinal cord injuries, stroke, brain injuries, MS or Parkinsons can avail of the service at DCU.

Clinical lead of the programme, Ronan Langan, says it's life changing: ' Something as simple as a wife being able to stand face to face with her husband and give him a kiss and hug for the first time, it's incredible'.
