A man who killed his father after spending two days drinking and taking drugs has been jailed for twelve years.
David Fortune, of Rutland Grove, Crumlin, Dublin, went on trial for murder last year but his plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter was accepted mid-trial.
In August 2018, Gerry Fortune had been quietly watching the 2018 All-Ireland Hurling Final in his living room when his son, David, burst in.
David had been drinking and taking drugs for two days at this point.
He was described as “paranoid, uptight and agitated.”
His trial heard he was socialising with a friend and other family members in a shed in his father’s back garden when a row broke out.
Gerry wasn’t involved in the dispute and was trying to calm him down when his son stabbed him in the neck in an entirely unprovoked attack.
He then fled the scene and hijacked a passing car to make his escape.
He stood trial for murder but his plea to manslaughter was accepted by the DPP after five days of evidence and he was jailed for 12 years today.
This is his second conviction for manslaughter. In 2006, he was also jailed for 12 years for killing a man outside a bar in Dublin when he was 17yo.
