A man who killed a man and injured two others during a rampage in Dundalk last year has been found NOT guilty by reason of insanity.
Mohamed Morei, an Egyptian man with no fixed address in Ireland, was assessed by two experts who both felt the special verdict should apply.
24-year-old Yosuke Sasaki died after being stabbed once in the back by Mohamed Morei in a totally unprovoked attack just after he left work in a factory in Dundalk on the morning of January 3rd last year.
Witnesses told Gardaí they saw a man fitting the description of Mr. Morei shouting at the sky and traffic with clenched fists.
He went on to randomly attack two other men before he was arrested.
He claimed he was a member of Isis, but Gardaí ruled out any link to terrorism. Gardaí described him as “agitated” and of having “seriously distorted thoughts” during his interviews.
He was remanded to the Central Mental Hospital where two consultant psychiatrists assessed him in the lead up to his trial.
Both concluded he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at the time and was, therefore, unable to stop himself. They both felt he satisfied the criteria for the special verdict of NOT guilty by reason of insanity, and the jury agreed after just 24 minutes of deliberations.
He’ll now be taken back to the Central Mental Hospital for further assessment to assist the court in deciding the best course of action for him.
