Gardaí say a 39-year-old man from Kilkenny was the victim of this morning's fatal stabbing in Dublin.
They are appealing for information on the incident, which happened on O'Connell Street.
A 28-year-old man was arrested and remains in custody.
At around 2am, a Garda on beat duty saw two men together and requested that they be monitored on Garda CCTV.
They were seen fighting on O'Connell Street and Gardaí arrived to find one man had been stabbed.
He was brought to the mater hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
A description of the second male was circulated and the 28-year-old was subsequently arrested on Marlborough Street.
Gardai are appealing for any members of the public in the O’Connell Street, Cathal Brugha Street, Marlborough Street areas between 1 and 2 am - particularly if they have mobile phone footage - to come forward.
