A Longford woman who settled her legal action for an alleged misinterpretation of her smear sample says she hopes she has done enough to secure her children’s future.

In 2017, 32-year-old Lynsey Bennett from Ennybegs, Killoe, Co Longford, was diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer, which required surgery.

Due to the delay in diagnosing it, she sued the HSE and the US lab that analysed her slide by claiming it was allowed to grow and spread without detection.

In a statement read out in court today, the HSE expressed its "deep regret" to her and her family, but there was no admission of liability.

Ms Bennett has been told she has a "limited life expectancy".

Speaking outside court today she expressed relief that her daughters would be taken care of "I can now focus on my own fight to stay alive as long as I can."

Lynsey went on to issue a message to her daughters "I hope I have done enough to secure you both a future free from financial worries and that even with me not here to guide you that you can both pursue your dreams and remember Mammy loves you".
