The Union of Students in Ireland has given a cautious welcome to reports that the marking of Leaving Certificate subjects is to move online this summer.
According to the Irish Independent, the move from the traditional paper based marking aims to make the process faster and more accurate.
Online marking involves papers being scanned and converted to digital images.
It's understood the move is being sped up following the successful High Court Action last year by Leaving Cert student Rebecca Carter over the length of time it takes to get the result of an appeal.
Vice President for the Irish language with the USI, Aoife Ní Dhéisigh, is hopeful digital grading will ensure this never happens again:
We would hope that this move towards digitisation would ensure that this doesn't happen again.
As it's so new, we'd be quite cautious in the roll-out of it.
