The Leaving Cert exams will be going ahead this year, with their start date now postponed until the last week of July or early August.
Practical assessments that were due to have been held in May are also being deferred to either late July/early August.
A new timetable for Leaving Cert students will be confirmed in early June.
The Junior cert exams have been cancelled, with students set to take school-based tests early in the new school year.
Meanwhile, all schools will remain closed until further notice.
Education Minister Joe McHugh says they will only be reopened when the public health advice assures them that it is appropriate to do so.
Minister McHugh says these decisions are being made in the best interests of Ireland's children, schools and wider society.
