Last Month Was The Second Warmest July Ever
For the first time in over a year - a global monthly temperature record hasn't been broken.
However, figures show the last two Julys have been the warmest months on record globally.
Last month's global temperatures ended a streak of 13 months where records were broken each month - similar to what was seen across 2015 and 2016 - the last time there was an El Nino phenomenon.
That effect is now ending - and seems to be replaced by the cooler La Nina - which brings cooler temperatures to ocean surfaces - however air temperatures over the ocean remain unusually high over many areas.
Last month's figures from the EU Climate Monitoring Service Copurnicus shows average temperatures at are 1.64 degrees above the pre-industrial era - but its not representative yet in the long-term averages which look at the last 30 years.
The average temperature in Europe was 1.49 degrees above the long-term average back to 1991.
