Labour: 'We don't how how much scrapping Seanad would save'

The director of Labour's campaign to abolish the Seanad has admitted he doesn't know how much the taxpayer will save by scrapping it.

Alex White says Labour's campaign for a Yes vote is more concerned with slimming down the Oireachtas instead of saving money.

Supporters of the Seanad have criticised Fine Gael's claims that scrapping the chamber would save 100 million euro over five years.

Minister White says he's not so clear on the savings, but that the cost element isn't the crux of Labour's campaign:

His comments come as Fine Gael again insists scrapping the Seanad would save €20 million a year.

While the Seanad costs around this much to run, the savings would only accrue if pensions were not paid to former members, and the staff supports from the Seanad were not reassigned to the Dáil or committees.
