Rishi Sunak has resigned as leader of the Conservative Party after they lost 250 seats.
The outgoing Prime Minister conceded defeat just before 5am on Friday and took responsibility for the party's disastrous performance.
"The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight.
"There is much to learn and reflect on and I take responsibility for the loss.
"The Labour Party has won this general election and I have called Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory.
"Today power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. That is something that should give us all confidence in our country's stability and future".
Mr Sunak was re-elected in Richmond-South Yorkshire, however, other high-profile Tories lost their seats, including former Prime Minister Liz Truss, Jacob Rees-Mogg, and Penny Mordaunt.
The Taoiseach has congratulated Keir Starmer on his party's victory, and says he hopes to speak with him ‘in the coming hours’.
Simon Harris says he looks forward to working closely with the incoming Prime Minister on a range of matters including Northern Ireland and says the win represents a ‘great reset’ for the UK.
"In the Labour Party manifesto, the language towards Ireland was language of partnership and of co guarantors of our shared peace.
This morning, from Dublin, I want to send a message to London that I will match Keir Starmer's commitment and energy to our peace process and to our future potential in so many areas".
Congratulations @Keir_Starmer on a comprehensive victory in the UK election. I look forward to working with you as close neighbours and friends. The relationship between Ireland and the UK is deep and consequential. I look forward to it going from strength to strength

Meanwhile, Count Binface, Elmo, Captain Beany, and even a pub were some of the more unusual candidates in the UK general election.
Describing itself as an intergalactic space warrior, Count Binface, who pledged to invite European countries to join the UK, managed to come sixth in Rishi Sunak's Richmond-South Yorkshire, constituency.
Elmo took the award for the least amounts of votes at 19, while a bean loving, orange coloured candidate called Captain Beany managed to get 618 votes.
