The Labour Court is expected to review the nurses' dispute tomorrow morning.
It would mark an effort to avert widespread disruption to the health service next week.
While the intervention would be significant, both the nursing unions and the Government have yet to change their stances on the issue of pay.
The court 10 days ago said the two sides were too far apart for it to intervene.
The third 24-hour strike by members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) got underway today.
It's due to continue until 8am on Friday morning.
Our strike enters day 3 today.
No nurse or midwife wants to go on strike, but sadly there are STILL no proposals from the government.#standwithmidwives #standwithnurses pic.twitter.com/LbAe84DOhv— Irish Nurses & Midwives Organisation (@INMO_IRL) February 7, 2019
80,000 people have been affected since the industrial action began, including 27,000 patients today alone.
Contingency planning teams from the HSE and nursing unions are set to meet to plan for next week’s strikes.
They’ll take place next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and involve 43,000 nurses from the INMO and the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA).
Meanwhile, the INMO is set to hold a national rally in Dublin on Saturday.
They say they're aiming to 'show the government that the Irish people stand with nurses'.
