Just one barbecue is as bad for the environment as driving 145 kilometres, according to a new study.
Researchers from the University of Manchester calculated that a barbecue for four people would release the equivalent of 800 balloons full of carbon dioxide.
The figure is based on the burning of charcoal and the energy used to produce the food.
Burgers are responsible for the largest part of the greenhouse gas emissions - releasing around 60 balloons or over 9 kilometres in a car.
Switching to chicken or going vegetarian significantly cut emissions.
