A member of the Defence Forces has died in a parachuting incident in Spain.
The soldier has been named locally as Declan "Doc" O'Connell, who was in his 50s and from Newbridge in Co. Kildare.
The Company Sergeant was not on active duty when he died in the incident yesterday.
In a statement, the Defence Forces confirmed that "a serving member has died in a parachuting accident in Spain" and that he was "off duty at the time".
No further details of how he lost his life have been released, but the Department of Foreign Affairs says it's aware of the case and is ready to provide consular assistance to his family.
