Four Irish citizens who've been jailed in Cairo could be facing charges for attempted murder.

Although police reports haven't named the four, it's believed they are the Halawa siblings, who were taken into custody last weekend when Egyptian army troops stormed a city centre mosque.

Omaima, Fatima, Somaia and Ibrihim from Clonskeagh in Dublin, reportedly took shelter in the Mosque when violent protests broke out in the Egyptian capital.

It's expected they'll be held for 15 days pending an investigation into charges including murder, arson, membership of an armed gang and possession of arms and explosives.

Meanwhile, the Tainiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamonn Gilmore will travel Brussles to day to meet with other EU Foreign Ministers to discuss the ongoing crisis in Egypt.

Nearly 900 people have died in a week of clashes between security forces and Islamist supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The bloodshed peaked in Cairo last Wednesday when the army stormed two camps of supporters of the ousted President Mohamed Morsi.

The arrest of the supreme guide to the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohamed Badie yesterday has also raised fears of fresh unrest.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs says Ministers will discuss what the EU can do to help in bring an end to the bloodshed, encouraging efforts to resume dialogue and promoting a return to a democratic process.
