New laws aimed at preventing violence against women have been agreed by the government.
A special cabinet meeting to mark International Women's Day has seen the Istanbul Convention ratified.
In 2015, the Government agreed to sign up to the agreement.
It obliges the State to protect women from all forms of violence.
The Istanbul Convention has been ratified! ✅
This Convention gives us everything we could possibly need to prevent violence and to protect women and their children.
There is no more excuses for inaction - time to end violence against women. #iwd2019 pic.twitter.com/JeOnLb8o01— Womenscouncilireland (@NWCI) March 8, 2019
