An investigation is underway at Belfast Zoo after a worker became trapped in the lion enclosure.
It happened last week when a trainee was shadowing a zoo keeper who left the enclosure and locked the gate behind him, which automatically released the lions into the pen.
A source told the Belfast Telegraph that the individual was 'lucky they weren't killed or severely mauled'.
Belfast City Council, which owns and manages the zoo, has released a statement saying safety is a priority.
"We're aware of an incident at the lion enclosure at Belfast Zoo earlier this month.
“We take the safety of all our staff, visitors and animals very seriously.
"An investigation is underway into the circumstances of this incident."
Meanwhile, the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums, says it's aware of the incident and is working closely with the zoo throughout the investigation process.
