The HSE has had initial discussions with Gardai and event promoters about introducing drug-testing at festivals.
It follows the deaths of a number of young people at music festivals here in Ireland and in the UK this summer.
Dr Eamon Keenan, of the HSE says 2We're certainly having initial discussions about it. We're looking at the evidence from other countries - seeing what's been useful and is it something we could pursue in Ireland".
The HSE has the following main harm-reduction advice:
- Start low and go slow.
Start with a very small dose and see how you react to the drug. Wait at least 2 hours before taking more.
- Leave the mixing to the DJ
Mixing drugs, including alcohol and prescription medication, increases your risk of becoming unwell or overdosing.
- Keep cool and stay hydrated
Sip water but don’t drink over a pint an hour. Take breaks from dancing and give yourself time to cool down.
- Don’t be afraid to get help
Especially if you or a friend becomes unwell or feels suicidal after using drugs. Be honest with emergency services about what was taken, they are there to help.
