The HSE says it's looking into the scale of the pension arrangements of the former Chief Executive of the Central Remedial Clinic Paul Kiely.

It took over the running of the clinic after the recent top-ups controversy.

A letter from the HSE to the Public Accounts Committee shows the administrator appointed by the executive has found 'significant issues' relating to the final salary payment and retirement package approved for Paul Kiely.

He retired last spring, and his package was signed off by the then board of governors of the CRC.

In the letter, HSE Director General Tony O'Brien says he's bringing the issues to the committee's attention because the arrangements may be 'at variance from the understanding the committee may have gained' at a hearing of the committee, attended by representatives of the CRC's board of governors last month.

Mr O'Brien says the CRC needs to satisfy itself that the payments made and benefits conferred are reasonable and proper, and any amounts were calculated correctly.

And he adds that if there was a loss to the CRC, then steps to put that right would have to be taken.
