A healthcare assistant has been jailed for 11 years for raping an elderly woman with Alzheimer's.
It happened at a nursing home in Co Dublin in the early hours of April 3rd.
Later that morning, the 73-year-old woman was found in a distressed state and told a member of staff that she had been raped.
At the Central Criminal Court today the care worker pleaded guilty to rape.
He has no previous convictions and has been in custody since his arrest in April.
The victims family described how they had been unable to comfort their mother by hugging her as they would since the rape and she remains terrified he will return to he room.
Her daughter told the court "they always said they would dread the day she loses her memory but now one day we hope she wakes up and doesn't remember."
