The Health Minister says the government is monitoring the situation with Strep A closely.

The HSE is still working to confirm whether the death of a young child in the North East and North Dublin healthcare region is linked to the bacterial infection.

Stephen Donnelly says his thoughts are with the family of the young girl who's believed to have died from the bacterial infection.

"It's something we're monitoring closely. Our thoughts are with the family of the child who recently passed away."

Minister Donnelly confirmed there are ongoing tests being done in connection with that case.

Common signs of a serious case of Strep A include fatigue or a fever that persists, despite treating your child with Calpol or Paracetamol.

The advice for parents is to contact their GP if they're worried about Step A. "If they are worried and if the symptoms aren't resolving through normal treatment, things like paracetamol, they should contact their GP."

Mayo GP and the Irish College of General Practitioners's lead for infection control, Scott Walkin, says mild cases of Strep A are actually quite common, but serious cases can cause severe illness.

"There's no one thing that will point directly to strep and what parents, and what people need to do really is to look out for evidence of severe illness. For example,  a child who's very lethargic and drowsy and who just won't improve despite giving some Calpol or ibuprofen, that's a sign to look out for."

"Fevers can happen with mild illness, but a fever that's persisting and a fever that just won't settle down despite giving pain relief is also a sign."

55 cases of Step A have been notified to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre since the start of the year, 21 of those have been since October.
