Eamon Ryan says it doesn't go far enough
The Green Party leader Eamon Ryan says Fine Gael's climate action plan - launched this morning - "lacks ambition".
The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has promised a 2 per cent reduction in emissions a year, and says the Greens' 7 per cent reduction promise is too "extreme".
But speaking this afternoon at the Green Party canvas in Dublin South, Mr Ryan says Fine Gael isn't going far enough.
"What this government has set as their mission is a 2 per cent per annum reduction over the next decade. Now what the scientists are saying is that there has to be at least 7 per cent and the European Commission are saying the same. That's the European Green Deal that everyone is working towards in Europe. That would bring us to a 50 per cent reduction by 2030. We have a choice in this election - do you want to vote for the status quo and lack of ambition and progress in climate that Fine Gael epitomise or do you want to make the leap?"
