The Government is set to fast track new laws to clamp down on cheap alcohol sales in off-licences and supermarkets.
The Sunday Independent newspaper reports the Cabinet is expected to approve the plans within the next two weeks.
It says that minimum unit pricing for wine, beer and spirits will come into effect within the next 12 months.
Under the new laws a bottle of wine costing 5 euro 99 cent will rise by 1 euro 11 cent.
Sheila Gilheany, CEO of Alcohol Action Ireland is welcoming the move saying "the minimum unit price is part of the public health alcohol act which was part last October. It has something we have been strongly calling for because it is an integral part of this public health approach to reduce the harm from alcohol consumption in Ireland."
