The government has approved the updated version of the Climate Action Bill.
It will legally commit to a 51 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
The legislation also sets Ireland on the path to net- Zero emissions no later than 2050 .
As part of the Climate Action Bill, carbon ceilings are set to be introduced for big polluting sectors.
It will legally require the government to hold 5-year climate budgets out to 2035 with strict targets for every sector of society.
Taoiseach Micheal Martin says "This is a landmark day for Ireland. We all know that Climate Change is already happening, and the time to act is now".
