The government's published the bill which contains all the emergency measures that will be needed if the event of a no-deal Brexit.

17 measures are included which the government says are aimed at protecting Irish citizens.

It gives some idea of the scale of change that could come about if the UK crashes out of Europe without a deal.

Measures are included to allow buses and trains to still travel between the Republic and Northern Ireland.

There's also amendments to make sure Irish students studying in the UK can still access SUSI grants, and the continuation of certain social welfare payments for Irish citizens in Britain.

There's updates to criminal law to make sure people can still be extradited and that the Gardaí and the police force can share documents electronically, as well as measures for the exchange of immigration data.

The bill deals with healthcare arrangements, the single electricity market, taxation and insurance issues.

Ministers are still hopeful that a deal can be reached before the March deadline, so this legislation doesn't have to be passed.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach and European Commission President spoke over the phone this evening.

President Juncker once again emphasized full solidarity with Ireland.

They looked forward to continued close cooperation between Ireland and the European Commission, including on intensifying "no deal" contingency action in the coming weeks.
