A 'latte-levy- on disposable cups is to be introduced by the end of 2021 as part of new Government proposals to crack down on waste
The cost of a plastic bag will increase from 22 cent to 25 cent, while heavier plastic bags will cost close to a euro.
The infamous latte levy is to be introduced to try to reduce the 22 thousand disposable coffee cups used every hour in Ireland.
Minister Richard Bruton is suggesting a tax of between 10 and 25c per cup.
A new waste recovery levy of 5 euro a tonne is going to be applied to waste going to landfill, incineration or for export, while the levy on landfills will also increase.
The Minister is opening a public consultation to decide what's the best way to bring in these changes.
There are further plans to develop a second phase of taxes which would focus takeaway containers, while a third phase will focus on reducing plastic food packaging.
All revenue raised from these measures will go into the Environment Fund and be reinvested in environmental actions such as Tidy Towns committees.
