The Government looks set to introduce a windfall tax on electricity companies.
Cabinet ministers will be asked to back the introduction of a cap on the profits made by electricity providers, that do not use gas.
Ministers will also be asked to sign off on a plan to seek a 'solidarity contribution' to firms which produce fossil fuels.
Both would be temporary measures while the cost-of-living and fuel crisis continues.
The price of gas and other fossil fuels has increased following the war in Ukraine and a range of international sanctions placed on oil and gas produced in Russia.
