The government has approved proposals for the role of a directly elected mayor to be created in Cork, Limerick and Waterford.
The proposals will now be put to a public vote on the 24th May- the same day as the local and European Elections.
The government had been criticised recently for the lack of detail on the proposal.
However following yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, details have emerged which show that if the plebiscite passes, the mayors will have powers in housing, planning, roads and the corporate function of the council.
