The German Chancellor says she will stand by Ireland all the way through the Brexit talks.
Angela Merkel is in Dublin to meet the Taoiseach.
She said Europe will have to find a way to protect the single market while also avoiding a hard border in Ireland.
Angela Merkel said it was moving to hear the personal stories of people who live near the border and suffered during the Troubles.
The German leader says she understands how important it is that walls fall and don’t come back up.
I thought it would be important for the Chancellor to hear directly from people from Northern Ireland and the border region, people for whom the border is a very real issue & with direct experience of conflict before the Good Friday Agreement. pic.twitter.com/kSVoIhAUYs
