Gardai will carry out checks at pubs from tonight to make sure they're complying with covid-19 guidelines.
Pubs that serve food have been open since Monday on the condition that they serve a substantion€9 meal to customers who stay for a maximum of 1 hour and 45 minutes.
However, Gardai and pub representatives have expressed concern that some pubs and customers have not been following the rules.
As a result Operation Navigation will commence from 7pm this evening.
Deputy Commissioner, Policing and Security, John Twomey says they were initially planning on carrying out spot-checks, but they are now expanding them.
An operational order has been issued to all local Garda managers to check pubs in their area are following the rules.
Where potential breaches of the Public Health Regulations are identified, and where a person does not come into compliance with the regulations, a file is submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a direction as to how to proceed.
