More than one thousand new gardai will be recruited this year.
A three-week recruitment campaign is due to get underway on Friday after it gets approval from government ministers today.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris is seeking approval to hire almost 900 new members of the force by the end of this year.
The plan being presented by the Justice Minister at today's cabinet meeting will see four groups of 225 new recruits entering Templemore at 11-week intervals, joining the already 200 trainees currently at the college.
