Each year, the Best in Travel lists start with nominations from Lonely Planet's contributors before being whittled down by a panel of travel experts to just ten countries, ten regions, ten cities and ten best value destinations.
Tom Hall, Lonely Planet's Vice President of Experience, said, "Galway in 2020 will be home to a year-long celebration and amplification of culture and creativity which travellers will love".
The accolade comes as the city gets set to take up the role of European Capital of Culture next year.
CEO of Galway 2020 Patricia Philbin said, "The Lonely Planet Best in Travel accolade is a fantastic endorsement of this incredible place on the western edge of Ireland and at the heart of Europe."
She added, "as 2020 approaches we are inviting people from right around the world to come and experience Galway in this special year."
