GAA Players Warned Players With Substandard Helmets Not Covered Under GAA's Injury Scheme

GAA players wearing substandard or counterfeit helmets may not be covered under the GAA's injury scheme.

The Chairperson of the Gaelic Games Helmet Working Group says it's the player's responsibility to make sure they're wearing head protection that's up to standard.

Consumer advice agency, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), and the GAA have issued an urgent safety warning about helmets with fake 'Gola' branding.

The safety alert was issued to parents and players after product safety inspections of the helmets, found sharp edges and screws sticking out.

The CCPC say the helmets pose a risk of serious injury to the face, head, and eyes.

The sports goods company, Gola, does not make helmets or licence its brand to any other company to make helmets.

The GAA's Jim Bolger say players have a responsibility not to wear counterfeit or other substandard, retro-style helmets.

" It has the potential then, if there's a player injured and they're wearing a substandard helmet or a helmet that's been interfered with, has adversely impacted the integrity of the helmet, our injury scheme may not apply in that instance.

"So that's a worrying trend as well. So the onus is on the players themselves".
