The Garda Commissioner says the fraud squad is now leading the investigation into the hacking of credit card details of some 80 thousand customers of Supervalu and Axa Ireland.
It's understood around 376 thousand people may have been affected by the security breach in Europe - after the company Loyaltybuild confirmed it was the victim of a "sophisticated" criminal attack.
Martin Callinan made the comments at a conference of senior Gardai in Co Tipperary.
